6 – Xenia Ignatyeva,
- Xenia Ignatyeva was a Russian teenager who, like thousands of other teens, became swept up in a controversial new craze. It’s basically a more dangerous version of planking and involves young people taking photos of themselves performing planks in stupendously risky locations so that strangers on the internet will think they’re cool.
- Xenia was just seventeen years old when she attempted to take a selfie from on top of a rail bridge in Krasnogvardeysky. The dark railway line in the background would make for a terrifying image, but unfortunately, Xenia lose her balance while up there and electrocuted herself on a high voltage cable. She fell to her death and people finally realised how dangerous this stupid craze is.
5 – Unidentified Nepalese Man,
- This photo from September 11, 2013, shows an unidentified Nepalese man in mid-flight after jumping from the Wuhan Yangze River Bridge.
- Emergency services had attempted to talk him out of jumping, but were unsuccessful. It turned out he had recently lost his job and was overwhelmed with despair.
- The photographer captured the man’s descent by complete accident. He was a tourist who was taking a photo to remember the thick air pollution.
4 – Joseph Avery,
- This amazing photo from 1853 shows a man named Joseph Avery desperately clinging to a log in the middle of the Niagara River. Avery was part of a group of three men who went boating along the river. They lost control of the craft when a strong current dragged into a rock.
- Avery’s two companions fell straight to their deaths over the waterfall, but Avery was able to scramble onto a log that had gotten stuck between two rocks.
- Incredibly he managed to hold on for eighteen hours and climbed onto a rescue boat that was guided downriver. Unfortunately, he had next to no luck that day as the boat capsized immediately after, tossing Avery straight into the river and over the waterfall like his friends. He died instantly.
3 – Carl Williams,
- Carl Willams was a notorious Australian convict who served life in prison for his role in a drug and murder ring.
- While serving time at Barwon prison, another prisoner named Matthew Charles Johnson brutally beat Carl to death using the stem of an exercise bike.
- This photo is a still from the CCTV footage showing the chilling moments leading up to the murder.
2 – Petra and Gary Slok,
- This happy-looking family photo wouldn’t be so eerie if it wasn’t taken aboard the doomed Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, which was allegedly shot down by pro-Russian separatists on 17 July, 2014.
- The photo depicts Petra Slok and her son Gary and was taken right before takeoff. All 298 passengers aboard Flight MH17 died in the attack and the photo is a chilling reminder of how fleeting life can be.
1 – Hot Air Balloon Tragedy,
- In 2012, eleven people died during a scenic hot air balloon accident in Carterton, New Zealand. At approximately seven a.m., the balloon struck a high voltage power line while attempting to land.
- As captured in these photos, the balloon instantly caught fire before breaking free and plummeting, while charred and ablaze, towards the ground.
- As of 2015, it is the third-deadliest hot air balloon accident in history.
