14 Under Water Animals with Crazy Abilities

General1

5 – Hippo Sunscreen,

5d

  • You probably think humans are the only ones who need to worry about getting sunburnt. Well, it turns out hippos also need sunscreen to survive the harsh African sun. But they can’t just walk into a pharmacy and buy some. I mean, that’d be ridiculous. How would they afford it? It’s not like they could get a part-time job. What would they do? Deliver pizzas? Do you guys even think before you speak?
  • Instead they produce it naturally – in their sweat! It’s a mucus-like reddish secretion that looks a lot like blood. It also helps to keep their body temperature down.

4 – Platypi Abilities,

4c

  • The Australian platypus is pretty much an abomination. I mean, let’s analyse this thing. It’s an egg-laying mammal, looks like a cross between a duck and a beaver, and it has poisonous spurs that can incapacitate a full-grown person!
  • If all that weren’t enough, platypi also have electro-receptors, allowing them to detect prey by reading the electric fields they leave behind. Basically if this thing feels like killing you it will find a way. It’s basically the Predator of the animal kingdom.

3 – Humpback Whale Herds Fish,

3b

  • Humpback whales have an unusual way of catching prey – and, nope, it doesn’t involve ejecting its stomach!
  • They catch and herd their prey by making a net out of bubbles. Fish become trapped in these ‘bubble nets’ and then whale just scoops them all up when it’s dinnertime. Yum!

2 – Speeding Octopi,

2c

  • Ever heard of cephalopod racing – the high octane sport where squids race octopi around an underwater track? No? That’s ’cause it only airs at midnight when there’s a full moon… And ’cause I made it up.
  • But it totally could be a thing because squids and octopi can actually propel their bodies forward at a speed of twenty-five miles per hour.
  • They do this by squeezing water out of their bodies at a really high pressure.

1 – Archerfish,

  • The appropriately named archerfish can catch low-flying insects by shooting a jet of water at them from two metres below! They’re deadly accurate, even in the dark, and they can produce enough pressure to knock insects right into the water – where they become fish food.
  • The super soaker fish – I mean archerfish – does this by pressing its tongue against the roof of its mouth. It’s basically a party trick that can kill.
