10 – Quake 4 – Strogg Transformation,
- If it weren’t for the low-fidelity graphics of Quake 4 this scene would be unbearable, nevertheless, this cinematic disturbed many people.
- The Strogg transformation scene is one of the first in the game and it involves watching the main character go through a brutal surgery in which limbs are cut off, the chest is cut by saw blades and the head is drilled from the main character’s perspective.
- Let’s just count ourselves lucky that this game didn’t have better graphics and a requirement to use the oculus rift.
9 – Gears of War 2 – Dom’s Wife,
- In a game about macho men doing macho things this scene came out of nowhere and both touched and disturbed those who played it.
- Dom is searching for his wife throughout the game and when he finally meets her she appears to be how he remembered her, but in a Scrubs like moment the reality snaps back and he sees her for what she truly is; a pitiful husk that was once human.
- Dom refuses to accept it at first but eventually comes to the decision to put her out of her misery.
8 – Killer7 – Goodbye Pedro,
- Pedro is a despicable man that made his way in life by trafficking organs in an underground ring; despite this, the way he went out in Killer7 left a perturbed aftertaste.
- Pedro betrayed the main antagonist Curtis and the way he paid him back is through murdering everyone Pedro loved and showing him the disembodied head of his daughter before killing him.
- It’s hard to believe that such a gory scene could be in the same game that includes a strange old man in a singlet thrusting for no good reason.
7 – Spec Ops: The Line – White Phosphorus,
- Keeping civilian casualties to a minimum is pretty much the M.O. for any first-world military force, but of course mistakes happen and that’s what Spec Ops: The Line is all about.
- After making a decision to rain White Phosphorus on the enemy the squad goes in to see the damage they caused, when they arrive they find a group of horrifically burnt people that were clearly civilians.
- To make matters even worse there’s a woman’s corpse still shielding a little girl’s eyes despite being burned beyond recognition
6 – Heavy Rain – Ethan’s Finger,
- If you thought the finger scene in Outlast was unbearable this scene is even worse, despite being less graphic.
- The main part that makes this hard to watch is the fact that Ethan is cutting his own finger off and you’re controlling the entire thing; if his screams of pain as he saws off his finger don’t make you cringe I don’t know what will.
- In order for Ethan to make it through the scene he drinks alcohol, in order for me to make it through the scene I turned to volume down and looked worse than Ricky Gervais in a bath.
