15 Most Influential Games of all Time

10 – Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos,

  • In case you didn’t know, this game laid the framework for modders to popularise two genres; Tower Defence and MOBAs, without this game both the mobile market and the esport scene would be completely different.
  • This is just another example of why having an easily moddable game is largely beneficial to your business, without it Blizzard would never be making Heroes of the Storm; it’s also proof that Blizzard should fix the map maker for Starcraft II.

9 – Street Fighter II,

  • Ah Street Fighter II, the game that made 2D fighting games what they are today, hell, even 3D fighters take a lot of inspiration from this game; it’s so influential that if your game doesn’t have the base mechanics of Street Fighter II it’s not considered a real fighting game.
  • On the flipside this series also started the trend of ‘ultimate/game of the year’ editions, where instead of just buying a separate expansion pack you have to buy the original game as well as the base game that you already paid for, thanks for that Capcom.

8 – Gears of War,

  • Most modern third person shooters borrow heavily from Gears, if the TPS game you’re playing has a cover system it’s borrowing heavily from Gears of War.
  • This system is pretty much the only way to allow precise aiming on a console; otherwise you need a lock-on system and an interesting movement system to keep it fresh.
  • Additionally, Gears is one of the main reasons why gruff-men doing gruff-men things is so popular.

7 – The World of Warcraft,

  • Before WoW MMORPGs were niche, with a small but dedicated fan base; for the most part, the games were far more player interaction focused and less developer made content focused, in other words they were mostly ‘sandbox’ MMOs instead of ‘theme-park’ MMOs.
  • Even though it’s the most influential MMORPG, the only thing it really inspired most other developers to do was waste their money trying to copy it, since content is king in theme-park MMOs and it’s hard to compete with a constantly updating game with so much history.

6 – Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty,

  • This game set the framework for most other RTS games, with mouse movement and resource gathering; it wasn’t the first RTS but it started the movement and without it there would be no Starcraft, Warcraft, Command and Conquer or League of Legends.
  • While Dune II was revolutionary for its time it’s hard to go back and play it unless you’re a really big fan of the franchise, in which case you’re better off taking mushrooms and rereading the books while pushing around toy soldiers in a sandpit.

  1. Hi there, I do think your website may be having internet browser compatibility problems.

Whenever I look at your site in Safari, it
looks fine but when opening in I.E., it’s got some overlapping issues.
I merely wanted to provide you with a quick heads up!

    Aside from that, fantastic website!
