15 Worst Video Game Clichés

10 – Doing the Chores,

fetch-quest-main-image

  • Fed-ex quests, fetch quests and any other simple task that you’d really rather not do fits into this cliché.
  • I don’t think I’m only speaking for myself when I say I’d much rather one amazing long and intricate quest than one hundred mindless tasks that involve essentially doing the same thing over and over.
  • If I wanted to do chores I certainly wouldn’t be playing a video game, but at the same time if I did want to do chores I’d probably seek serious psychological help.

9 – One Dimensional Villains,

Ganondorf_Costume_1_-_HW_DLC

  • Muahahaha I’m going to destroy the world because reasons, I mean, because the world is full of badness and I’m just making it better.
  • So many games have this, it’s getting very old; why not have a villain whose morals are questionable but believable?
  • I’m starting to get sick of killing villains that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Saturday morning cartoons.

8 – Inexplicably Indestructible and Unclimbable Props,

ShrineWinter_02

  • Oh look at that, a pile of rubble blocks you from reaching the last boss, better go and spend hours of your time unlocking a path to get around it.
  • Oh you mean there’s a wooden door that needs a key to unlock? Better go and find the key instead of breaking it down with my knives, explosives and ballistic weaponry.
  • Surely it wouldn’t be too hard to create a hindrance that feels believable? Instead of the rubble, how about a giant wall? Instead of the wooden door, how about a thick metal one?

7 – The Chosen One,

Sora_(Art)_KH

  • This one makes me roll my eyes every time I see it, in the real world there’s no such thing as a chosen one, sure there’s also no such thing as magic but that’s beside the point.
  • Why not have the main character earn their status as god among men instead of giving it to him because he’s the one the prophets spoke of?
  • I mean the protagonist can have something special about them, but if they’re the only person with that something special maybe you should rethink your plot or cut to the chase and call the main character Jesus 2.0.

6 – Hold them off while I do X,

ghost-ps4-destiny

  • This one has been around since the Nintendo 64 days and it’s still around, if not more popular, in games made today.
  • It’s wearing really thin, especially thanks to games like Destiny where it felt like every single goddamn mission had you hold off enemies whilst Dinklebot opened the door.
  • Just once, I’d like to have a game set you up to hold off the oncoming horde only to have the door open within a second of said set up, or just let us take the stairs instead of waiting for an elevator.
