9 Strangest Animal Mutations.

  1. Glow in the Dark Cat

NEW ORLEANS -- Everyone knows that cats can see in the dark, but that wasn't good enough for some New Orleans scientists. They produced Mr. Green Genes, a cat that glows in the dark and is destined to be more than just a novelty for Halloween parties. He's a nearly 6-month-old orange tabby but, under ultraviolet light, his eyes, gums and tongue glow a vivid lime green, the result of a genetic experiment at the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species. Mr. Green Genes is the first fluorescent cat in the United States, said Betsy Dresser, the center's director. The researchers made him so they could learn whether a gene could be introduced harmlessly into the feline's genetic sequence to create what is formally known as a transgenic cat. If so, it would be the first step in a process that could lead to the development of ways to combat diseases via gene therapy. The gene, which was added to Mr. Green Genes' DNA when he was created earlier this year in the Audubon center's laboratory, has no effect on his health, Dresser said. Cats are ideal for this project because their genetic makeup is similar to that of humans, said Dr. Martha Gomez, a veterinarian and staff scientist at the center. To show that the gene went where it was supposed to go, the researchers settled on one that would glow. The gene "is just a marker," said Leslie Lyons, an assistant professor of population health and reproduction at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, who is familiar with the Audubon center's work. "The glowing part is the fun part," she said.

  • Y’know those movies where evil scientists are testing crazy drugs on people and they somehow gain superpowers? Well this that but for cats.
  • Sometime around 2010 scientists inserted jellyfish genes into cat embryos and were successfully at merging the two. The specific jellyfish genes were the ones that produce fluorescent proteins that glow in the dark. Weird thing to do but okay.
  • Turns out the whole reason to do this was to test how successfully they could alter the cat’s DNA in order to test treatments for various diseases like AIDS.
  1. Monkey Pig

2

  • Some things just cannot be unseen and this Pig monkey thing is one of them.
  • You might have seen this a little earlier in the year when it went viral. The Cuban born piglet caused bafflement with locals, having what appeared to be the face of a monkey. Vets who saw the poor pig deemed it just an unfortunate congenital defect, meaning no…a monkey did not have sex with a pig.
  • The piglet died after only just 4 days alive, again due to the strange mutation it suffered. A lot of people believe the mutation was caused by chemical pollution in the area. Whatever chemical can do that needs to be stopped…somebody think of the piglets!
  1. Three Headed Frog

2

  • If living with two heads is strange than you bet that three heads is just god-damn freaky.
  • Found in the UK in 2004, this unfortunate looking three headed frog made headlines across the globe. Most outlets started blaming pollution for creating the three headed, six legged monstrosity. The kids who found it named it “Froggy” but the teacher preferred “the good, the bad and the ugly”. Hell this is all ugly.
  • No one really seemed to have an explanation for the mutation, some skeptics however believed it was three separate frogs that had fused due to a well-documented mating process called multiple amplexus. Which in all honesty is probably a much more nightmarish explanation.
  1. Cyclops Cat

3

  • Seriously at this point we have enough mutant cats to form a god-damn X men team and this guy would be the leader.
  • Cyclops cat though can’t shoot lasers out of its eye. The one eyed Bengal kitten went viral when a video of its birth was posted online. It shocked both the owner and the veterinarian, as you would expect.
  • Unfortunately the kitten (named Cleyed) was actually already dead in the video. See as well as missing a second eye, Cleyed was also missing a nose meaning the poor little guy suffocated shortly after exiting the womb. Rest in Peace Cleyed, leader of the X-Cats.
