Top 15 Dumbest Video Game Controversies

10 – Portal 2 – adopted joke,

  • Portal 2 was one of the most anticipated games the year it was released, so with all that publicity it’s only natural that some buffoon would complain about its content, this time it was because of a joke made by the antagonist Wheatley.
  • The joke was ‘Alright, fatty. Adopted fatty. Fatty, fatty no parents’ to which GLaDOS replied something along the lines of ‘what’s wrong with being adopted?’, but one parent was annoyed at this and of course got onto TV to complain about it.
  • Apparently bad guys shouldn’t say bad things, even if they ultimately make the bad-guy look like an idiot in the process, well I guess we better get our villains to say only nice things, because that totally wouldn’t ruin most, if not all, of Portal’s story’s charm.

9 – Bulletstorm: The Worst Video Game in the World,

  • Ah Fox News, without you who would we laugh at? It seems that in 2011 they were still stuck with the mindset that video games are only for prepubescent children, because when a game came out with swearing, violence and sex related humour they lost their shit.
  • Apparently Fox News had never heard of the ESRB, or just age gated ratings in general, because Bulletstorm was given a 17+.
  • I’m pretty sure 17 year olds have seen and heard much worse than the word ‘fuck’, jokes about gang bangs and comically large amounts of blood.

8 – Mass Effect Sex Scandal,

  • Fox News printed an article with the headline ‘New videogame shows full digital nudity and sex.’ after Mass Effect’s release; they also claimed that the game was marketed towards kids and teenagers.
  • If you’ve played Mass Effect before, or even if you haven’t, you’re sure to know that both of these claims are completely false.
  • You can’t see full frontal nudity, the sex scenes are tamer than an educational book teaching kids about the birds and the bees and the game had a 17+ rating with the ESRB.

7 – Grand Theft Auto IV – New York City,

  • GTA IV is set in a parody of New York City and the city officials couldn’t have been less approving of this if they tried.
  • Apparently they didn’t like the depiction that NYC has a crime problem, claiming that it paints a poor picture of how the city actually functions.
  • What’s dumb about this complaint is that the city has never complained about the numerous books, shows and movies that depicted the city in much the same way, but you know, Video Games are a product of the devil and it’s only natural to complain about them.

6 – Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – Hot Coffee,

  • We all know that sex is evil, especially when it involves jagged tah-tahs and jolty animation sequences, so it’s no surprise that when people found out that San Andreas had a hidden sex mini-game everyone was shocked and appalled.
  • Of course, when I say hidden I mean the mini-game was disabled in every sense of the word and to access it you need to change the coding of the game to enable the ability to play it.
  • So why did everyone get so upset over something that no one could access without using modding and/or hacking tools? I honestly don’t know, maybe you can tell me.
